![]() ![]() "Measuring the World" marks the UK debut of a distinctive and original voice in contemporary fiction. The author's acute powers of observation and ability to write memorable dialogue shine through its every page. ![]() ![]() Daniel Kehlmann has produced a novel of rare charm and readability, distinguished by its sly humour and unforgettable characterisation. He can run prime numbers in his head, cannot imagine a life without women and yet jumps out of bed on his wedding night to jot down a mathematical formula. Gauss, a man born in poverty who will be recognized as the greatest mathematician since Newton, does not even need to leave his home in Gottingen to know that space is curved. Humboldt, a Prussian aristocrat schooled for greatness, negotiates savannah and jungle, travels down the Orinoco, climbs the highest mountain known to man, counts head lice, and explores every hole in the ground. Among the recently published historical novels and little books on topics in the history of science, Daniel Kehlmanns Measuring the World (trans. Towards the end of the 18th century, these two brilliant young Germans set out to measure the world. ![]() "Measuring the World" recreates the parallel but contrasting lives of two geniuses of the German Enlightenment - the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt and the mathematician and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss. ![]() ![]() ![]() It actually became a very influential book in the genre of travel writing. This was one of his early works, but he already had the power of description and fun storytelling, so it is an enjoyable recount of his travels. If you have read some of his other books, like Treasure Island, Kidnapped, or his book of children’s poems, A Child’s Garden of Verses, you know he is a wonderful writer and storyteller. Repeated blows seemed not to influence her until he learned to use the magical word “Proot” to get her moving. At first he loathed her for her intractable differences of opinion displayed concerning the rate of travel to be maintained. Modestine, the donkey, demanded that her owner exercise all his ingenuity. ![]() ![]() One morning after a night’s sleep out of doors Stevenson scattered coins along the road upon the turf in payment for his night’s lodging. He traveled as his fancy led him, stopping to sleep whenever occasion offered. His only companion was Modestine, a donkey. In twelve days, from September 22, 1878, until October 3, 1878, Robert Louis Stevenson walked from Le Monastier to St. He wrote of his adventures in his book Travels With a Donkey in the Cévennes. ![]() He took with him a companion - a donkey he named Modestine. It was a hiking journey of approximately 120 miles through the Cévennes Mountains of France, but it was not a solo hike. When Robert Louis Stevenson was in his late 20’s, he set out on a journey that he hoped would provide material for writing a book. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I got the idea from a New York Daily News headline. Where did the idea for Like a Sister come from? We sold a proposal in July 2020 and it’s been out since March. So, I had a career reset and got the idea for Like a Sister. ![]() And then, Midnight Ink closed while I was working on the third book in the series in 2018. Once it got published, it was great because it won all these awards. Finally, Terri Bischoff at Midnight Ink, which was a midsize publisher, took a chance on it. It took us over a year to sell Hollywood Homicide. I met my agent through the Pitch Wars agent showcase. I finally finished in 2014 and got into Pitch Wars. I had the idea for my first book, Hollywood Homicide and worked on it for National Novel Writing Month in 2011. The first two are in a series called The Detective by Day. What was your path to writing and publishing like? ![]() ![]() ![]() The other five pirate captains had to decide on a successor, and they chose Zheng Yi's widow, Zheng Yi Sao. Then disaster struck, and the pirate chief was killed in November 1807, either in action or in a typhoon. ![]() Zheng Yi was remarkably successful, and not even raids by the Chinese authorities had very much impact on his operations. On occasion, even coastal fortifications fell to the pirates. Coastal towns were also attacked, either to loot them of provisions or to encourage the payment of protection money, a strategy also applied to captains of merchant vessels who were required to purchase a pass or risk attack from any ship in the confederation. In the case of foreign ships, captured mariners were often ransomed. These goods were then sold on to merchants on the coast. It was not uncommon for Chinese women to be mariners, captains, or involved in piracy.Ĭaptured cargoes included precious goods like gold, silver, rolls of silk, spices, Chinese porcelain, tea, and cotton. ![]() ![]() Several photos of this book are available on the AbeBooks website. ![]() Sage¿s original intention was to write a trilogy but this series proved so popular that she went on to write seven novels in the series, like another well known children¿s author. Amy was speaking metaphorically-right, Amy? you didn't actually call Sophie 'garbage.'" My friend Susan, the host, tried to rehabilitate me with the remaining guests. One guest named Marcy got so upset she broke down in tears and had to leave early. When I mentioned I had done this at a dinner party, I was immediately ostracized. ![]() I didn't actually think I was worthless or feel like a piece of garbage.Īs an adult, I once did the same thing to Sophie, calling her garbage in English when she acted extremely disrespectful toward me. I knew exactly how highly he thought of me. But it didn't damage my self esteem or anything like that. I felt terrible and deeply ashamed of what I had done. “Once when I was young-maybe more than once-when I was extremely disrespectful to my mother, my father angrily called me "garbage" in our native Hokkien dialect. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In the course of founding a literary movement they label “visceral realism,” the pair undertake a quixotic journey hoping to find their predecessor, Mexican poet Cesárea Tinajero, known to have disappeared into the Sonoran Desert decades earlier. This almost aggressively literary novel, which won major Latin American literary prizes and follows into English translation several briefer works ( Last Evenings on Earth, 2006, etc.), evolves around the professional friendship of poet intellectuals Arturo Belano (an obvious authorial surrogate) and Ulises Lima. The search for a missing poet is the nominal subject of the late (1953–2003) expatriate Chilean author’s blazingly original 1998 masterpiece. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She was also a friend of Lord Peter Wimsey’s. Harriet Vane, as readers of Strong Poison will remember, was a writer of detective fiction, with a very lively curiosity. The ploy with Bolsheviks is especially good, although the Playfair cipher (borrowed from John Rhode) is too mathematical to sustain the reader’s interest in the way the codes of Murder Must Advertise or The Nine Tailors do, and the reader may marvel at the sheer elaborateness of the crime. The play with the time of death is superb, SPOILER both the way in which Wimsey destroys “cast-iron” alibis only to discover that they were faked for a time when the murder was not committed, and the haemophilia business. The lore of tides and boats, horses, trains and motorcars is necessary to the construction - and explosion - of alibis for the murder of the gigolo found by Harriet Vane on a lonely beach, taken originally to be suicide (absence of footprints), until Lord Peter demonstrates otherwise. ![]() There is only one murder – and that committed in the first chapter – the reader’s interest is kept throughout, Sayers engaging him with both clueing and character. No book better testifies to Sayers’ ability to handle the long form than these 450 pages of small print. ![]() ![]() This started out a little shaky for me - I was worried that I had been introduced to another heroine who was just going to run around obsessing over hot guys for the whole book - but it picked up and took a definite turn fairly quickly and I ended up loving it by the end. I received an ARC copy of this book from LibraryThing That is, if she can keep them from killing each other. To unite her enemies against their common foe, Faline will need to convince the Wild Women to do the one thing she fears most-exhume their power buried deep beneath centuries of oppression. The Hunters are on her tail and the one person offering to help is her ex-lover, Officer Marcus Garcia, who has just enough ties to the supernatural world. ![]() ![]() Now her sister is missing, along with Wild Women from all over the country. ![]() No sense in catching the unwanted attention of her local Hunter authority, a group of holy soldiers born to police the supernatural and keep Wild Women-huldras, mermaids, succubi, rusalki and harpies-in check.Īll that changes the night she heads out for a date, hoping to get lucky. Well behaved women seldom make history, but they still end up as the monsters of folklore.įaline Frey is a bounty-hunter, more comfortable relying on perp files and handcuffs than using her huldra powers to take down a suspect. ![]() |
